Every good business story starts with a problem. Ours started with that driver who cuts you off.
Patrice was on the phone with her best friend, who was soon turning 60 and—as her best friend was venting about life while driving—Patrice was still trying to find her the perfect gift. Doing what many of us do behind the wheel, she was venting loudly (and lovingly) about the idiot who had just cut her off. You know the moment: the hands, the sighs, the deeply personal commentary aimed at someone who cannot hear you.
After the loud sound of her horn and the "What the F**k are you doing!" rant by her BFF, Patrice had a thought: What if laughter was the prescription for this?
So she created a custom hand-made gag gift, a pharmacy-style novelty pill bottle labeled for surviving everyday nonsense. Not real medicine, obviously. Just comic relief, filled with the candy she knew her best friend loved.
When her friend opened it, she laughed so hard she couldn’t breathe. She later showed off her gift to Quinn (her niece).
Quinn took one look at the bottle and said what every good idea needs to hear: “Patrice has to sell these.” Patrice and Quinn then had a meeting...And just like that, the People Are Exhausting company was born.
Patrice brought the life experience, the humor, and the very real understanding that adulthood is a lot. Quinn brought the social media savvy, fresh ideas, and the confidence to say, “Yes, we can absolutely turn this into something.”
Two generations. One shared sense of humor. And a mutual belief that people are exhausting, but laughter helps.
Today, The Sanity Saver Collection part of the People Are Exhausting line is made up of novelty pill bottles that arrive empty on purpose, so customers can fill them with candy or snacks tailored to the recipient’s taste. Sweet. Salty. Chocolate. Minty. Everyone copes differently, and that’s kind of the point.
What started as a "What the F**k are you doing!" rant fueled a home-made novelty gift and a store built around humor, personalization, and the idea that sometimes the best gift isn’t serious at all.
It’s just honest.
Because no one needs another generic candle. They need a laugh, a snack, and the reassurance that they’re not alone in finding people exhausting.
